Sore feet that arises after running is a common issue. Even those who wear comfortable and supportive shoes can leave the feet aching after a rigorous run. Generally, long-distance running can result to sore feet.

Although running can cause the feet to ache and swell, there are some basic measures that can alleviate the symptoms. A doctor should be consulted though if the soreness continues or becomes worse.

Adequate rest

Resting the affected foot is the ideal remedy for sore feet. The length of rest needed for the feet to recuperate is based on the distance and intensity of running.

In some cases, a single long-distance run is enough to cause soreness while seasoned runners only experience discomfort after a series of runs. In either case, rest must include limited standing or walking if possible.

If walking or running could not be avoided for a certain span of time, schedule the run at a time to allow the feet to sufficiently rest before being on the feet again.

Elevation

Sore feet might be complemented by swelling. The feet are swollen due to the amount of pressure placed on them while running. The pressure can cause the blood to buildup in the feet. The continuous pounding while running disrupts with the circulation within the feet.

In case the feet are distended after running, remove the shoes and raise the foot. Make sure that they are raised above the level of the pelvis to enable the buildup of blood to circulate more capably.

The application of an ice pack can help numb the soreness and discomfort due to running. After a session, remove the shoes and socks and raise the feet. Apply an ice pack on the sore area to alleviate the pressure that accumulates in the feet while running as well as avert or lessen the swelling that has already formed. Apply the pack on the area for at least 10-15 minutes.

Foot bath

A foot bath can help relax the sore feet. The temperature of the bath water is based on the preference of the individual. Most prefer warm water to relax the muscles in the feet while others enjoy cold water to numb the soreness and alleviates the buildup of pressure.

Different oils and salts can be added to further soothe the skin and provide comfort to the feet. When soaking the feet, it should be at least 10 minutes.
