A stingray sting is one of the common beach-related injuries. Stingrays have flattened bodies with slim tails that have serrated spines containing venom. These spines can cause puncture wounds and lacerations.

Even though not aggressive in nature, a stingray sting can occur if an individual accidentally steps on one.

What are the indications?

  • There is immediate piercing, intense pain that peaks in 1-2 hours
  • Bleeding wound
  • The wound area can become inflamed and even turn red or bluish
  • Swollen lymph nodes

  • Symptoms such as fever, nausea, vomiting, chills, tremors, muscle cramping, fainting, paralysis, elevated heart rate, seizures and low blood pressure can develop. In some cases, death can occur.

How to care for a stingray sting

In case medical care is not readily accessible, there are certain guidelines recommended in managing a stingray sting.

  • Flush out the wound using fresh water
  • For pain control, immerse the wound in water as hot as the individual can tolerate.
  • With a pair of tweezers, remove any stingers.
  • Using soap and fresh water, scrub the wound.
  • Avoid covering the wound using tape or closing it with stitches. If bleeding is present, you should apply direct pressure.
  • Dab on a topical antibiotic ointment if there are indications of infection such as redness, drainage of pus or warmth.
  • Perform CPR if needed.

In case infection develops, oral antibiotics are usually prescribed.

  • The antibiotics must be continued for at least 5 days after all the indications of infection have cleared.
  • The doctor should be informed regarding any drug allergy before antibiotics are started.
  • A sunscreen can be used since some antibiotics can trigger sensitivity to the sun.
  • Individuals who have an impaired immune system should seek medical attention.

When to seek medical care

In most instances, stingray injuries necessitate immediate medical care. Once a doctor is consulted, treatment with medications can be started.
