Acid reflux and heartburn are the prevalent conditions that affect many individuals all over the world. The condition is clinically known as gastroesophageal reflux disease in which the esophageal sphincter unseals and compulsorily discharges the stomach contents back into the esophagus. This result to the burning sensation linked with the symptoms of acid reflux. There are certain foods that must be avoided to minimize or prevent the discomfort.

Acidic foods

There are some acidic foods that can trigger the symptoms by allowing the esophageal sphincter to unwind and enable the contents of the stomach to drift back into the esophagus.

The esophagus is responsible for guiding the digestive process by transporting food from the mouth up to the stomach. There are certain foods that can result to acid reflux which includes the following:

  • Citrus juices and fruits

  • Tomato sauces

The symptoms of acid reflux due to consumption of citrus fruits vary from one individual to another. Grapefruit, lemons and oranges contain elevated levels of acid that often leads to reflux in some individuals.

Reflux from fatty foods

Fatty or fried foods usually reduce the digestive functions by keeping the food in the stomach longer. As an outcome, the stomach pressure increases and places added pressure on the weakened esophageal sphincter which enables the stomach acid to return back into the esophagus. Dairy, high-fat and deep-fried foods can add up to the occurrence of the symptoms.

Alcohol and caffeine

All forms of coffee both regular and decaffeinated minimize the pressure in the esophagus that can worsen reflux. Wine, beer and alcohol can also intensify acid reflux.

The carbonated and alcoholic beverages also allow easy back flow of stomach acid into the esophagus since they relax the lower esophageal sphincter. Alcoholic beverages can also increase the production of stomach acid. Chocolate also contains caffeine and the high concentration of theobromine which is an agent that allows the gastric acids to enter the esophagus which works by relaxing the lower esophagus.

Once an individual is suspected with issue, it is recommended that the individual sets an appointment with a doctor so that further assessment can be carried out to properly diagnose the condition.
