Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System

Canada’s WHMIS

The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) was created by the Canadian government and business organizations to protect workers from injuries and damages due to occupational hazards. There are thousands of Canadians who work with hazardous materials and the risk of them becoming injured is very high. With the WHMIS training, this risk is significantly reduced.

The system is comprised of a set of symbols, data information sheets, and staff training regarding the previously mentioned concepts. All provinces in Canada are governed by the Occupational Health and Safety Act, which requires businesses that transport and handle hazardous materials to train its staff in the WHMIS. Through this act, both the worker and the business is protected from damages that can occur because of the hazards. On a nationwide level, the Ministry of Labor’s inspectors enforce the safety acts and regulate WHMIS training offered by providers all over Canada.

Toronto First Aid Training

At Toronto First Aid, a WHMIS training program is available monthly. There are two ways to take WHMIS training:

  1. Via classroom set-up – This course lasts four hours long, covering six units in lectures and laboratory sessions.
  2. Via distance education – This course is popularly known as “online training”, where students don’t have to leave their homes to learn about the WHMIS. It lasts three hours, covering six modules.

In both set-ups, there are short tests given at the end of each unit/module. The final exam is given at the end of training. We record all your scores in case you ever need an additional copy of your credential; you can just give us your name and training dates and we will be able to give a copy.

Note: If you are taking online training, you will notice that the lessons are divided into modules. There is a test at the end of each module that you need to pass before you can proceed to the next module.

You can start your enrollment by using online form (linked below). We have also posted available schedules below for your perusal. Once you chosen the date when you want to take your training, sign up immediately online. We will confirm your slot immediately during the next business day. However, if you want a speedy enrollment, we can confirm your slot as you enroll if you sign up in person. Our offices are open from 8 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon.

Certified for WHMIS

The WHMIS program at Toronto First Aid is a certification course, meaning students are awarded training credentials after they complete the course. Unlike other training credentials, the WHMIS certificate doesn’t expire. Certified trainees don’t need to take refresher courses to keep the validity of their credentials.
