A flu shot is an ideal way to protect the body against the flu. Remember that even if it is a minor ailment, it is capable of causing serious issues in some individuals. It can also be deadly in rare instances.
When do I need a flu shot?
The peak of the flu season can start as early as October up to May. It is recommended to get a flu shot as soon as available. It usually takes 2 weeks for the vaccine to take effect. Take note that the earlier a shot is given, the higher the odds of staying healthy.
Types of vaccine
- Traditional flu shot – injected into the arm muscle and made out of pieces of inactive flu viruses
- Egg-free shot – these are not grown inside eggs and an option for individuals over the age of 18 who have severe egg allergies
- High-dose – usually given for individuals ages 65 and older. In most cases, they might require a stronger dose to get the same protection
- Intradermal – involves a tiny needle that only goes skin deep and suitable for individuals ages 18-64.
- Nasal spray – made out of live but weakened flu viruses. It is suitable for healthy individuals ages 2-49 who are not pregnant, not allergic to the vaccine or any of its ingredients and do not have a weakened immune system.
There are some vaccines that provide protection against more than one flu virus strain. The trivalent vaccines usually work against 3 strains while the quadrivalent vaccines work on 4 types.
How the flu shot works?
The flu shot works by prompting the body to fight the infection from the flu virus. It helps produce antibodies to fight off the virus upon exposure.
The vaccine is modified every season in which the strains are chosen based on the ones that are likely to show up. The vaccine will not cause the flu but it takes about 2 weeks to take effect. Some individuals acquire the condition and then catch the virus before the body is ready to fight it.
