There are various types of skin conditions and one of the common types is scabies that typically affects children but can also occur in adults. Scabies is caused by mites that burrow deep into the skin. In most cases, the symptoms start 3-4 weeks after being exposed. Take note that scabies is a contagious condition and can easily spread from one individual to another or through direct contact with infested clothing, furniture or pets.  The condition can spread quickly in day care centers, hospitals, and even in nursing homes. Take note that individuals can spread scabies to others even before the symptoms manifest.

Determine the itchy regions

You have to take note of the areas of skin that are itchy. Scabies typically cause severe itchiness or pruritus especially at night time or after the individual takes a bath. The itchiness is most likely to occur on certain parts of the body such as the elbow, wrist, armpit, waist, nipples, buttocks, shoulder blades or in between the fingers.

If an individual experiences any of these symptoms, there are ways to help ease the discomfort caused by the condition. You can register first aid training today to learn ways to help ease the symptoms of this skin condition.

Examine the skin

You have to assess the skin for red-colored, pimple-like rashes. Among infants and young children, the rash can occur on the neck, head, face, palms and the soles of the feet. Among older children and adults, the rash typically manifests between the fingers, around the waist, elbow, wrist, nipples, armpits, shoulder blades and buttocks. Do not forget to check for sores on the skin that are triggered by scratching that can become infected with bacteria.

Check closely for any evidence of mites burrowing under the skin. The burrows appear like elevated grayish-white or skin-colored lines and can be difficult to find since they might be as few as 10-15 mites.

Check for vesicles and crusts on the skin

When it comes to the elderly, those with weakened immune systems or those unable to scratch due to paralysis or mental disability, Norwegian or crusted scabies are quite common. Individuals who have crusted or Norwegian scabies can harbor up to 2 million mites per every individual and can be contagious.

A doctor should be consulted regarding the symptoms. The doctor will perform a physical exam and if burrows are present, scrapes will be taken to determine if the mites can be seen under a microscope.

Important considerations to bear in mind

At the present, there are no home remedies that can be used to eliminate scabies mites. Once an individual has signs of a mite infestation, proper action must be taken due to its contagious nature. It is best to consult a doctor for proper assessment and treatment if you suspect that an individual has scabies.
