How to lessen excessive or smelly flatulence
- Eat small, frequent meals
- Chew food and drink beverages slowly
- Eat a healthy, balanced diet
- Regular exercise to improve the digestion of food by the body
- Drink peppermint tea
- Avoid chewing gum, smoking or sucking on hard sweets to avoid swallowing air
- Do not use loose dentures
- Avoid eating too many foods that are hard to digest
What are the causes?
Excessive or foul-smelling flatulence can be caused by swallowing air or eating foods that are hard to digest. It is oftentimes an indication of various health conditions.
In some cases, excessive or smelly flatulence can also be a side effect of some medications such as:
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen
- Antifungal medications
