A burn on the roof of the mouth can be caused by hot foods and beverages. The tissues in the mouth are prone to burns than the other soft tissues in the body since they are thin and delicate.

How to care for a minor burn on the roof of the mouth

A first-degree burn on the roof of the mouth does not require medical care. There are several measures that can be done at home

Food and beverages

The individual should be provided with something cool or frozen to alleviate the discomfort. Milk can also coat the interior of the mouth for a layer of relief.

Roof of the mouth
In mild cases of burns in the roof of the mouth, it can be managed at home and heals in a few days.

Some of the foods that can help include:

  • Smooth, creamy foods such as ice cream, yogurt and sour cream
  • Sugar-free gum
  • Frozen or cold foods such as pudding, ice pops and applesauce

As the injury heals, avoid crunchy foods or those that have sharp edges. Spicy and hot foods must also be avoided.

Mouth rinses

A saltwater rinse can ease the mouth pain and promotes healing of the wound. This must be done around 3-4 times throughout the day.

Over-the-counter medications

An over-the-counter pain medication can relieve the pain and inflammation such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen and benzocaine.

Is it severe?

A severe burn or 2nd or 3rd degree burn requires prompt medical attention. Some of the indications include:

Aside from the blisters, there are pockets of pus if an infection develops within the mouth.

What is the outlook?
