As the cases of COVID-19 continue to rise, the government aims on preventing further spread by implementing a mandatory mask law. Face masks should be worn in all indoor public spaces in Edmonton as of August 1. This is an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19 as the number of cases continues to rise.
The Edmonton city councilors passed a bylaw to mandate masks inside publicly accessible spaces until the end of the year. This includes city property, the transit system, and city-operated buildings, as well as private buildings accessed by the public and vehicle-for-hire services. Those who are entering stores, entertainment venues, restaurants, malls, and recreation centers must wear a face mask.
As a way to meet the needs of all residents, a traditional mask is not the only option. The rule in the city requires the wearing of any face covering that completely covers the nose, mouth, and chin. This could include bandanas, cloth, scarves, and non-medical masks, but not face shields.
The enforcement by the city will be focused on education and awareness of how wearing a face mask can help prevent the spread of COVID-19, but a fine of $100 could be issued for non-compliance. Refusal of service can also be possible for not wearing a mask. Businesses can sell or provide masks for those who do not have one but not required to. The city also posted a list of mask suppliers for local businesses in case they need to replenish their supplies.
