Mold is a form of fungi that is present both indoors and outdoors. When indoors, they are typically found in dark, damp areas such as in the bathroom or basement as well as on water-damaged walls. In the outdoors, mold might form in a pile of leaves or in dusty grass clippings.
Many individuals react if exposed mold spores, usually with sneezing to lung issues. It is important to note that there are various degrees of symptoms of the illness and the severity of the signs is based on the length of exposure to the spores.
What are the indications of a mild case of mold illness?
The usual signs of mild exposure striking resembles an allergy such as:
- Itchy, watery eyes
- Reddened, itchy skin
- Sneezing
- Headaches
These mild symptoms are generally due to brief exposure to the spores such as raking piled leaves in the lawn. If the individual does not have any underlying health conditions and a healthy immune system, he/she will not have any reaction.
Moderate symptoms
If the individual has a mold allergy or sensitive to mold, the signs might be more severe. Some of these symptoms include:
- Nasal stuffiness
- Eye irritation
- Wheezing
If regularly exposed to mold or on and off for an extended span of time, the reactions might include fever, shortness of breath and lung issues due to an infection.
Severe symptoms
A severe case of the illness often manifest if exposed to large amounts of mold over a prolonged period such as several years.
The usual signs include:
- Significant damage to the eye including blindness
- Long-term memory loss
- Severe issues with the lungs such as bleeding
- Cancer
If worried about exposure, the house should be regularly checked to ensure that there are no hidden areas of growth. A doctor should be seen if the individual had a previous exposure and note down any symptoms experienced.
