The safety precautions that aim on controlling the spread of COVID-19 include physical distancing, wearing of a mask, and regular handwashing. Sadly, some have concerns over the mask-wearing policy. The transit union in Edmonton is putting its foot down when it comes to any expectation that drivers enforce the new mandatory face mask order on city buses and LRT trains.
The public will be required to wear face masks or coverings on transit and in city-run buildings. The president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 569 stated that he was skeptical about making masks mandatory in transit since ensuring compliance of every rider might be impossible.
Enforcement will be focused on education and increasing awareness of the new rule and there is currently no fine for non-compliance.
There are some exemptions to the face mask rule on transit including that they are not required for children below two years of age, people with underlying medical conditions or disabilities that disrupt their ability to wear a face mask or covering as well as for caregivers of people with a disability.
