Close look on psoriasis remission

The indications of some chronic ailments such as psoriasis might arise and settle over the years. If there are no indications of active psoriasis such as the reddened itchy plaques or patches on the skin, it is in a state of remission.

The remission phase can last for a long time, even reaching years but it does not indicate that the condition has settled and the symptoms might arise when least expected.

What triggers a remission?

The exact cause why psoriasis goes into a state of remission is still unclear. The treatment for the condition can cause the plaques and discomfort to steadily reduce until they are completely gone. Some of these treatment options that can bring on remission include the following:

  • Laser therapy on the affected areas can cause remission for up to 3 ½ – 6 months
  • Phototherapy can cause remission for up to 12 months
  • Topical treatment which includes ointments or creams can cause a varying remission period.
  • Oral or injected medications prescribed by the doctor that are used regularly can cause a varying remission period depending on the medication used. If methotrexate is used, it can cause remission lasting for 24 weeks.

In most cases, the doctor might recommend continuing treatment for some time even if the skin already cleared up and there is no more itchiness or discomfort. The additional treatment is aimed on prolonging the remission if possible.

How to prolong the remission period?

There are several measures that can help lengthen the remission period of psoriasis such as:

  • Daily baths in warm water
  • Pat the skin dry using a soft towel
  • Avoid any harsh soaps and skin products that can trigger skin irritation
  • Use gloves when handling cleaning products that can irritate the skin
  • Apply a skin moisturizer specifically an oil-based type. These moisturizers can hold moisture in the skin longer than the non-oil-based variants. It should be applied several times throughout the day, depending on the climate.
  • Lower the level of stress with the help of guided meditation or yoga
  • Expose the skin to moderate amounts of sunlight
  • Avoid or lower the intake of alcohol especially those who use medications since alcohol can reduce its effectiveness
  • Avoid smoking
  • Proper care of any infections or skin injuries
