A sunburned scalp can occur if exposed to excess ultraviolet (UV) light. Remember that any exposed skin can end up burned including the scalp.

What are the signs?

The indications of a sunburned scalp are the same as a sunburn in a different part on the body such as:

  • Redness
  • Warmth or hot to the touch
  • Itchiness
  • Pain or tenderness
  • Small blisters filled with fluid

In case the sunburn is severe, the individual might also experience the following:

It might take a few hours for the initial signs of sunburn to manifest but it can take up to 24 hours or longer to determine its full extent.

Management of a sunburned scalp

An individual with a sunburned scalp can be treated at home. Within a week or until the sunburn has recuperated, the following measures should be followed:

  • Take a cool shower or use tepid water
  • Check the label on the shampoo and conditioner. Until full healing occurs, avoid those that include sulfates which can dry up the scalp and trigger irritation. Conditioners that contain dimethicone can block the pores, trap heat and cause further damage.
  • Skip on using a lot of hair products since they might contain chemicals that can irritate the sunburn.
  • If possible, dry and style the hair naturally. The heat from flat irons and blow dryers can damage the recuperating scalp.
  • A cold compress can be used to soothe the pain
  • Moisturize the affected scalp gently with aloe vera gel or coconut oil to lessen the discomfort and promote healing.
  • Keep the body hydrated by drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day to moisturize the skin.
  • For pain relief, an over-the-counter pain medication can be used.
  • Use a hat while the sunburned scalp is healing.

Remember that anyone can end up with a sunburned scalp. It is vital to protect the scalp in the same manner as the skin by avoiding direct sun exposure and protecting with proper covering or applying a sunscreen.
